All About Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is fairly common, and while occasional bruxism is harmless, regular recurrences can cause some unpleasant consequences. Some people grind their teeth or clench their jaw when they are under stress, and others experience bruxism when asleep.

How do I know whether I grind my teeth?

Common symptoms of bruxism include a dull and constant headache, a sore jaw, tooth sensitivity to temperature, gum inflammation, bite wounds on the insides of the cheek and audible grinding sounds during sleep.

Why could it be bad?

Constant teeth grinding can lead to the fracturing, loosening or weakening of teeth, and it can wear them down significantly. It can also affect your jaw, TMD/TMJ, hearing and, in some cases, even alter the appearance of your face.

What can I do?

If you are grinding your teeth at night, the easiest solution is to ask your dentist to fit you with a mouth guard, which protects your teeth, to wear when you sleep.

If your bruxism is caused by stress, consider these stress-reducing tips:

  • Reduce your caffeine intake
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Don’t chew on non-food items such as pencils, fingers, etc.
  • Be aware of when you are clenching or grinding your teeth and try to loosen your muscles when it happens so you can teach yourself not to physically react to stress in this way
  • Try to relax before bed
  • Massage your neck, cheek, forehead, jaw, and the sides of your head to relax your muscles and decrease the chance of bruxism during sleep
  • Hold a warm washcloth to the sides of your cheek and your face before bed, which also work to relax your facial muscles
  • Make sure to drink plenty of water, because dehydration has also been linked to bruxism
